Astec Life Science proposes herbicide products unit in Maharashtra

Astec Life Science Limited has proposed to come up with a unit to produce herbicide products and intermediates at Mahad in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.

Astec Life Science Limited has proposed to come up with a unit to produce herbicide products and intermediates at Mahad in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.



The products proposed are herbicides 2,4-Dichlorophenoxy Acetic Acid, Dimethyl Amine, Imazaethapyr, Imazapyr and 3-Aminotrizole and intermediates 4-Chlorostyrene and EPO.



“These are important chemicals and none of them is banned for production in other developed countries and nor is banned for use. As such some of these products will b import substitute and some will be export oriented,” the firm said in its presentation to the Environment and Forests Ministry seeking environmental clearance.



The company proposed to invest Rs 32 crore for the project. The total land area is 40,000 sq m of which 10,000 sq m is built-up area.



Good greenery shall be maintained in and around the site by planting various types of trees and maintaining lawns, it said.



In order to control noise pollution, the company said there will regular programme of preventive maintenance of all the mechanical equipment, which will be meticulously followed.



It said to reduce gas emissions from boilers, hot air generators and process vents, caustic scrubbers will be installed to bring down emission concentrations below prescribed limits.



The construction and operation of proposed project shall result in employment generation and not have a notable impact on socio-economic pattern in study area, the company said.



It said it will adopt all safety and hazard identification measures besides a strong disaster management policy.




There will be medical check-up facilities for all employees, the company said.






According to Astec Life Science Limited, there are no natural forest blocks in the area and also no ecologically sensitive areas like national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, coral formations or biosphere reserves with 10 km radius of the site.
