Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, a subsidiary of ONGC, has proposed a 440,000 TPA polypropylene plant and GTG with HRSG units at its phase-III refinery at Mangalore.

In a letter to the Environment and Forests Ministry, it said that this is its first polypropylene unit in the south India being set up to meet the regional demand.

The estimated project cost is Rs 1803.78 crore and the area required for the plant is about 40 acres within the MRPL complex.

About the emission standards for volatile organic compounds from waste water collection and treatment facilities, MRPL submitted to the MoEF that to implement the suitable modification on the existing refinery WWTPs, a long shut down is needed of the WWTP, which in turn calls for the whole refinery shut down.

The ambient air quality data presented in EIA report was monitored by NEERI team at 10 locations in study area around MRPL premises during January-March, 2011.

Polypropylene will be produced from polymer-grade propylene. A white solid product, Polypropylene can be manufactured as pellets and easily transported in bags. Considered to be one of the most widely used forms of thermoplastic, it is extensively used in the consumer products, healthcare, fibres, textiles, and automotive sectors.

EIL is the engineering consultant and implementing agency of the project.
