The Ammonia Decomposition Catalyst is designed to break down ammonia (NH₃) into hydrogen (H₂) and nitrogen (N₂) at high temperatures

Devson Catalyst, a manufacturer of specialty catalysts, adsorbents and ceramic balls, has strengthened its position in higher-value catalyst solutions with the successful development of its ammonia decomposition catalyst, developed through the company’s in-house R&D and technical capabilities.

The company has already secured commercial orders from NMDC and Tata Steel Limited for the newly developed product after customer evaluation and approval. The Tata Steel order marks the first order for Devson Catalyst’s Ammonia Decomposition Catalyst from Tata Steel, providing a significant validation of the product’s commercial potential.

The development adds a comparatively higher-value product to Devson Catalyst’s existing catalyst portfolio.

The Ammonia Decomposition Catalyst is designed to break down ammonia (NH₃) into hydrogen (H₂) and nitrogen (N₂) at high temperatures.

In hydrogen-production applications, the catalyst functions as a reforming catalyst, enabling hydrogen to be recovered from ammonia. It can also be used to decompose ammonia present in industrial process gases before downstream processing.

The product has potential applications across several industrial segments, including:

Metallurgical and steel processing: Applications involving sulphur recovery and treatment of process gases.

Renewable energy and green hydrogen: Conversion of ammonia into hydrogen.

Oil and gas refineries: Ammonia decomposition in relevant gas treatment and processing applications.

The company said the product has already completed a successful customer application, with NMDC placing its first order in May 2026. The subsequent order from Tata Steel further strengthens the product’s commercial credentials.

Savan Prahlad bhai Patel, Managing Director, Devson Catalyst Limited, said: "We received our first order for the Ammonia Decomposition Catalyst from NMDC in May 2026, and the product has been successfully used by the customer.

"The receipt of the first order from Tata Steel following this successful application provides further validation of our product and its performance. We believe this can open new opportunities for us across relevant industrial applications. We will continue to focus on developing specialised catalyst solutions based on customer and industry requirements."

With successful customer validation already achieved and commercial orders from two major industrial customers, Devson Catalyst is positioning its Ammonia Decomposition Catalyst as a new growth opportunity within its higher-value product portfolio, particularly across steel, industrial gases, refining and emerging hydrogen applications.
