Conductive carbon materials are increasingly central to battery performance
Birla Carbon is stepping up its push into specialty materials with a growing portfolio of conductive carbon solutions aimed at the rapidly evolving battery market and other high-value applications where conductivity and performance are critical.
Conductive carbon materials are increasingly central to battery performance, helping create efficient pathways for electrons within electrodes. The choice of conductive additive can influence charging speed, high-rate performance, cycle life and manufacturing efficiency—key priorities as battery makers face mounting pressure to deliver greater performance at scale.
Shashank Awasthi, President, Specialty Materials, Birla Carbon, said, “Electrification is creating new performance demands across the materials value chain, and advanced carbon materials have an important role to play in meeting them. At Birla Carbon, we are combining our expertise in carbon materials with an expanding specialty portfolio to help customers address these evolving requirements.”
He added: “Established lithium-ion battery manufacturers need to showcase supply chain resilience, extended cycle life, and ever-increasing fast charging requirements, which Birla Carbon's portfolio enables. Next-generation cell technologies, like LMFP, sodium-ion, solid-state, and metal-air, are rapidly improving by incorporating ConductexTM i carbon blacks and NanocylTM carbon nanotubes into their formulations.
"Our global footprint, technical capabilities, and collaborative approach enable us to work closely with customers to co-develop solutions tailored to their performance and processing needs."
Birla Carbon has expanded its specialty materials capabilities over the past several years, building a portfolio that combines conductive carbon blacks with carbon nanotubes. At The Battery Show, the company will spotlight its ConductexTM i conductive carbon black grades, NanocylTM carbon nanotubes and carbon black-CNT blend formulations, targeting a broad range of conductive applications.
The company says the solutions are designed to deliver high purity, strong conductivity and uniform dispersibility. Conductex i carbon black grades can also help reduce solvent consumption and energy requirements during battery electrode manufacturing, potentially lowering production costs for manufacturers.
Beyond conventional lithium-ion batteries, Birla Carbon is positioning its conductive additives around emerging industry priorities including charge acceptance, higher battery capacity, dry coating and solid-state technologies.
As demand for advanced battery technologies continues to grow, the company is using its global footprint, technical expertise and specialty materials portfolio to target a market increasingly focused not only on performance, but also on manufacturing efficiency, consistency and supply-chain reliability.
