GK Energy was selected for 150 MW / 300 MWh capacity at a tariff of Rs 2,38,000 per MW per month
GK Energy Limited has secured a Letter of Award from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) for setting up 150 MW / 300 MWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Maharashtra, marking the company’s entry into the fast-growing energy storage market.
The award was made under MSEDCL’s Tariff-Based Global Competitive Bidding process, conducted through an e-reverse auction, for a larger 2,000 MW / 4,000 MWh BESS programme backed by Viability Gap Funding (VGF).
GK Energy was selected for 150 MW / 300 MWh capacity at a tariff of Rs 2,38,000 per MW per month. The project is expected to generate annual revenue of Rs 42.84 crore, excluding GST, over a 15-year period from the commencement of commercial operations.
The award represents a significant expansion beyond GK Energy’s established solar-powered agricultural pumping business, taking the company into electricity storage alongside its existing renewable-energy operations.
GK Energy said the move is part of its broader strategy to build a decentralised energy platform spanning solar pumping, rooftop solar, distributed renewable infrastructure and battery storage.
The company said it has been progressively broadening its business in line with the strategic direction indicated to stakeholders, with the aim of creating a renewable-energy platform serving customers across rural, semi-urban and urban India while reducing concentration on any single programme, scheme or end-market.
BESS technology is increasingly important as India expands its renewable-energy capacity. Battery systems can store electricity when generation is high or demand is low and release it when required, helping manage the variability of solar and wind power, balance electricity supply and demand, ease pressure on the grid and support power availability during peak-demand periods.
For GK Energy, the Maharashtra award adds a new layer to its existing project-execution capabilities.
By adding BESS to its existing execution capabilities, GK Energy is building a more comprehensive platform across decentralised power generation, storage and delivery. The Company intends to draw on its project execution experience, decentralised operating network and presence across multiple states to expand its participation in emerging clean energy opportunities.
The company also plans to leverage its existing execution experience and ground-level infrastructure across rooftop solar, energy storage and other emerging renewable-energy opportunities, alongside its established solar agricultural pumping business.
The strategy is aimed at allowing GK Energy to participate across a wider spectrum of India’s energy transition while developing multiple business verticals in parallel.
Commenting on the Award, Gopal Kabra, Chairman & Managing Director & CEO, GK Energy Limited, said: "GK Energy began its journey by making solar powered agricultural pumping systems accessible across rural India. Over the years, the Company has expanded into rooftop solar and distributed renewable infrastructure.
"This award marks the next stage of that journey as GK Energy enters the battery energy storage segment and develops capabilities across both renewable power generation and storage. BESS is the need of hour that will redefine how India generates, stores and consumes electricity. By storing surplus energy and releasing it during peak demand, it reduces the burden on the grid, helps balance supply and demand, and brings greater efficiency in the way power is used, while reducing reliance on conventional power.
"As the share of renewable energy in our power mix continues to rise, storage is what allows clean energy generated during the day to be available when the country needs it, ensuring a more reliable, round the clock supply of green power."
