XL Batteries & ENEOS forge pact to advance long-duration grid storage

XL Batteries is developing grid-scale organic flow batteries designed to provide long-duration storage


Energy storage company XL Batteries has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ENEOS Holdings, Inc., the parent company of one of Japan’s largest energy firms, as the companies move to accelerate the commercial development of long-duration energy storage technology.
 
The agreement sets a framework for long-term collaboration and will initially focus on a joint feasibility study examining the commercial advancement of XL Batteries’ Organic Flow Battery technology. The companies will also explore opportunities for future large-scale deployment.
 
The partnership comes as power grids face mounting pressure from electrification, industrial demand and the rapid expansion of data centers—trends that are increasing the need for energy storage capable of delivering power reliably over longer periods.
 
XL Batteries is developing grid-scale organic flow batteries designed to provide long-duration storage using abundant, non-toxic electrolytes rather than scarce and corrosive materials. The company says its technology is intended to offer a safer, lower-cost option for high-cycle applications while retaining the established architecture of flow batteries.
 
“XL Batteries’ technology is purpose-built to meet the growing need for long-duration energy storage, and this collaboration with ENEOS HD will help accelerate our ability to scale,” said Tom Sisto, CEO.
