The US chemical industry and federal regulators have deepened their long-running safety partnership, marking a new phase in efforts to protect American workers

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), part of the US Department of Labor, signed an Ambassador Alliance Agreement—cementing what both sides describe as a strengthened commitment to safer, healthier workplaces nationwide.

The move elevates a collaboration that has already driven industry-wide training, expanded safety outreach, and sharpened awareness of federal enforcement and rulemaking. Key ACC groups—including its Center for the Polyurethanes Industry and its diisocyanates panels—have played a central role in pushing those efforts forward.

“When we signed our initial agreement with OSHA nine years ago, we made a clear commitment to work collaboratively to strengthen worker health and safety across the polyurethanes value chain,” said Jason Sloan, director of CPI.

“This Ambassadorship reflects meaningful progress, expanding access to training and technical resources for employers, workers and occupational health professionals. We’re proud to continue partnering with OSHA to help promote safe handling and build a stronger safety culture industrywide.”

Officials say the alliance has already produced tangible results, including new medical screening guidance for employers and employees and broader awareness of critical safety priorities such as fall protection and hazard communication.

“For the diisocyanates industry, this partnership has been an opportunity to share insights from the field and turn them into helpful resources for employers and workers,” said Erin Dickison, associate director of the DII and ADI panels. “We look forward to continuing this engagement with OSHA and contributing to efforts to make continuous safety improvements.”

Originally launched in 2017 as a two-year initiative, the ACC-OSHA Alliance was renewed in 2020 for five more years. Under the new Ambassadorship, the partnership will now continue indefinitely—so long as both sides remain committed to working together.

The message from both industry and regulators is clear: collaboration, not compliance alone, is driving the next chapter of workplace safety.
