Activated carbon, a byproduct of industrial processes like water treatment, plays a crucial role in removing micropollutants
AFRY has been tapped to carry out the detailed design for Kemira’s new activated carbon plant in Helsingborg, Sweden, a key step in addressing the rising demand for sustainable water treatment solutions.
Activated carbon, a byproduct of industrial processes like water treatment, plays a crucial role in removing micropollutants—including hazardous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—from drinking water and wastewater. Kemira’s upcoming facility will reactivate spent carbon, regenerating it for reuse, and is set to begin operations in the second half of 2027. The move comes amid tightening European regulations and growing environmental demands.
AFRY will provide a full suite of engineering services for the project, including detailed design, procurement, construction management, and acting as building work environment coordinator.
“This project is an important initiative for Kemira, and we are proud to contribute to their vision of sustainable water treatment solutions. With our broad engineering expertise, we contribute to the development of this facility with a focus on innovation and environmental responsibility,” said Guy Skantze, SVP & Head of Chemicals & Biorefining at AFRY.
