The launch also marks the introduction of BASF Aroma Ingredients’ new innovation concept based on Safe-by-Design principles

BASF Aroma Ingredients has launched a new citrus fragrance ingredient designed to provide perfumers with a non-allergenic alternative to orange terpenes while delivering longer-lasting freshness and enhanced creative flexibility.

Rather than serving as a direct replacement for traditional orange materials, Micadelva introduces what BASF describes as a new orange platform, enabling fragrance houses to reformulate products with modern agrumic citrus effects and improved performance compared to conventional citrus ingredients.

The launch also marks the introduction of BASF Aroma Ingredients’ new innovation concept based on Safe-by-Design principles, derived from the European Commission’s Safe and Sustainable by Design framework.

The approach is intended to help fragrance manufacturers navigate increasingly complex regulatory requirements while supporting the development of a future-ready portfolio of ingredients.

Micadelva combines olfactive performance with sustainability credentials. The ingredient contains 80% renewable carbon, is readily biodegradable and, based on current estimates, is expected to achieve a low product carbon footprint in the A++ range, below 2kg CO₂e per kilogram.

“With Micadelva and our Safe-by-Design innovations, we are setting the direction for next-generation fragrance ingredients. The compelling sustainability profile contributes to the green transformation of our customers.

"This enables our customers to innovate with confidence while maintaining creative performance in an evolving market and regulatory environment,” said Steffen Götz, Senior Vice President, Aroma Ingredients at BASF.

As the latest addition to BASF’s Future-Proof-Palette, Micadelva brings a fresh approach to citrus fragrance creation. The ingredient offers a clean orange-peel character complemented by subtle metallic nuances and delicate floral facets, delivering clarity and lasting freshness across fragrance formulations.

The company positions Micadelva as a non-allergenic alternative to orange terpenes, addressing growing demand for ingredients that combine performance with improved regulatory profiles.

Following its European debut in May 2026, BASF plans a phased global rollout to support customer reformulation and innovation projects across key markets.

“Micadelva and the expansion of our Future-Proof-Palette with Safe-by-Design innovations demonstrate BASF’s strong scientific expertise in developing innovative aroma ingredients with differentiated olfactive and functional performance,” said Felix Gard, Head of Specialty Aroma Ingredients at BASF.

“At the same time, it reflects our deep regulatory know-how, enabling solutions that support customers in navigating evolving regulatory requirements.”
