Bayer seeks to position itself at the center of a more connected and responsive canola ecosystem throughout 2026
Bayer Crop Science Canada is launching a sweeping new push to transform the future of canola—arguing that incremental change is no longer enough for one of Canada’s most critical crops.
The initiative, dubbed Advancing Better Canola (ABCs), aims to shake up how the industry approaches innovation, bringing together genetics, agronomy, crop protection, and digital tools in a coordinated effort to tackle mounting challenges facing farmers.
At its core, the program is a call for deeper collaboration across the sector, as Bayer seeks to position itself at the center of a more connected and responsive canola ecosystem throughout 2026.
“With decades of experience behind us, we’re ready to embrace a future where canola’s potential expands in ways we’re only beginning to imagine," says Antoine Bernet, Country Division Head, Crop Science Canada. "Advancing Better Canola is our commitment to building real, connected systems that will make canola resilient, profitable, and sustainable for the next generation of farmers."
The company says the ABCs initiative will fundamentally reshape how it operates in the canola space, anchored in three pillars: stronger leadership through industry collaboration, greater transparency to rebuild trust in innovation, and a push to create fully integrated agricultural systems.
That ambition is already being backed by significant investment.
Earlier this year, Bayer announced a $45 million Canola Innovation Centre in Winnipeg, designed to accelerate breakthroughs in root biology, climate resilience, and crop efficiency—areas seen as critical to long-term productivity. At the same time, the company is building out an end-to-end seed production network across Western Canada, tightening control from breeding through to packaging.
The strategy also builds on Bayer’s broader shift toward a new operating model, Dynamic Shared Ownership (DSO), introduced in 2024 to speed up innovation and better align with farmers’ evolving needs.
“Advancing Better Canola is designed to bring farmers and industry partners together to listen, convene and understand integrated approaches in the field,” said Shaun Corneillie, North American Canola, Cereals & Biofuels Lead, Bayer Crop Science. “As growers navigate weather variability, cost pressure, and market uncertainty, they need practical ideas that work in day-to-day farming."
