Corbion, a major player in sustainable specialty food ingredients, has strengthened its position in the fast-growing omega-3 sector with a new US patent covering a liquid suspension of algal biomass with a DHA-rich omega-3 profile.
The innovation is built on a proprietary system that suspends lysed algal cells in oil, improving stability and performance in feed applications. The company says the breakthrough is rooted in its algal fermentation platform and is designed to secure long-term differentiation in a competitive nutrition market.
At the commercial level, Corbion’s AlgaPrime DHA LS product brings the patented technology into real-world use, offering a consistent DHA-rich profile along with easier handling and greater flexibility in feed formulations. It is already widely used across aquaculture feed, animal nutrition, and pet food sectors.
Manufactured at industrial scale through algal fermentation, Corbion’s AlgaPrime range is fully traceable and positioned as an alternative to ocean-derived ingredients—an increasingly important factor for global customers focused on sustainability and supply chain resilience.
With the new US grant, Corbion now holds enforceable patents across major markets including Europe, several Latin American territories, China, and Australia, with additional regions still under review.
“This progress reflects our continued focus on developing meaningful innovations that bring concrete customer value” said Tim Rutten, Head of Nutrition and Pharma Ingredients. “With broad protection in place that is still expanding, AlgaPrime DHA LS is well positioned to support our customers across aquaculture, animal nutrition, and pet food.”
