Evonik has completed the backward integration of its world-scale MetAMINO (DL-methionine) production hub in Mobile, Alabama, marking a major milestone in the company's global methionine manufacturing strategy.

The project establishes on-site production of the key intermediate methyl mercaptan at all three of Evonik's major methionine production hubs — Mobile in the United States, Antwerp in Belgium, and Singapore — creating a fully integrated global production network designed to strengthen supply reliability, improve operational efficiency, and enhance sustainability.

"We are proud to have completed the backward integration of our Mobile hub, a complex and demanding project that marks an important step forward for our methionine asset strategy," says Gaetano Blanda, head of the Animal Nutrition business line at Evonik.

"It strengthens our global production network, reduces exposure to market volatility, and enhances our operational position, enabling us to grow together with our customers in a sustainable way."

The Mobile integration is expected to strengthen Evonik's ability to serve customers across the Americas by reducing dependence on external supply chains while increasing production resilience.

According to the company, producing methyl mercaptan on-site cuts the carbon footprint of DL-methionine produced in Mobile by around seven percent. The move also eliminates the need to transport hazardous intermediates over long distances, reducing logistical risks and improving operational safety.

"For our MetAMINO customers in the Americas, a reliable regional supply is essential," says Paulo Teixeira, Regional Vice President Americas at Evonik Animal Nutrition.

"By producing key intermediates on-site in Mobile, we are less exposed to global supply disruptions and can provide the stability our customers – and ultimately the end consumers of food products – need in an increasingly volatile environment."
