A major fire, which broke out at Indian Oil
Corporation?s lube blending plant at Taloja in Navi Mumbai in the late hours of
Monday night has been completely put out by 7.30 am, with no casualties or
injuries.
The fire, which was limited to a shed in a very small area of the plant (only
3000 Sq.M out of 1,00,000 M2 area of the plant), has been successfully put out
by IndianOil?s fire and safety personnel, who rushed to the spot, using fire
tenders and hydrants. Additional fire tenders requisitioned from MIDC fire
station and the neighboring industries were pressed into service to put out the
fire, and cooling operations are on currently.
The 1800 kl per month plant blends and fills lubricants in small cans and drums,
besides filling specialty lubes. It operates on single shift (8.00 am-5.00 pm).
All the other facilities of the plant, including storage tank farms,
manufacturing plant, laboratory and fire-fighting facilities are intact.
The fire was noticed as a spark by the security personnel deployed at the plant
around 1.30 am in the night, and preliminary reports indicate that the cause of
the fire appears to be an electrical short circuit, The exact cause of the fire
and the extent of product loss will be assessed as soon as the cooling
operations are completed.
