The Indian chemical industry is an industry-of-industries with a combined turnover of $160 billion growing at 100 basis points faster than India’s GDP, making it an important sector to propel the growth of the nation’s economy. Being one of the most diversified industries, the chemical industry in India covers more than 80,000 commercial products and is expected to double its size at $300 billion by 2025.

Digitization is going to play a major role in making the Indian chemical industry globally competitive. However, the current digitization of the Indian chemical industry is below average. Digital will have a significant impact on many areas of the chemical industry, with the potential to change value chains, lead to higher productivity and more innovation, and create new channels to market.

Speaking on the role of digitization to make chemical industry Aatmanirbhar, Pravin Prashant, Editor, Indian Chemical News said, "In chemical industry, digitization is a complex process so one needs to form a division which has members from Information Technology, Mechanical, Instrumentation and Electrical, along with process owners so that retrofitting becomes easy and company can reap the benefits in terms of increased productivity, enhanced efficiency and cost optimisation."

Given all the excitement about digital, it is essential to separate the substance from the hype and carefully evaluate what this will mean for the industry. Digitization is a big boon during COVID-19 times as it helps in reducing manpower, increasing production and bringing efficiency. Presently, few processes are digitised but there is more to do during corona pandemic. This will also help in lessening the wear and tear of the company thereby achieving 100% production capacity.

The government is swiftly implementing various schemes announced under the Rs. 20.97 lakh crore Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan package which is going to have a multiplier effect on the Indian economy.

ICN’s upcoming initiative on Aatma Nirbhar chemical sector aims to highlight success stories of self-reliant initiatives adopted by the industry towards making India a truly empowered nation.
