Mitsui Chemicals is ramping up production of its market-leading MR high refractive-index lens materials, investing in a major capacity expansion to meet growing global demand for thinner, lighter ophthalmic lenses.
The company announced plans to build a new production facility at its Omuta Works site, with commercial operations expected to begin in the first half of 2029. The expansion will significantly strengthen Mitsui Chemicals’ ability to supply its MR portfolio to lens manufacturers worldwide.
MR by Mitsui Chemicals has become the de facto global standard for high-refractive-index lens materials, widely used in premium eyewear products.
Through its advanced lens and coating materials, the company supports customers across the vision care value chain and continues to drive innovation in optical performance.
Demand for high-refractive-index ophthalmic lenses is expected to remain strong over the long term, fueled by global population growth and a rapidly rising number of people affected by myopia. The trend is particularly pronounced in Asia and North America, where consumers are increasingly seeking high-performance, value-added vision solutions.
The new facility will expand production capacity across multiple MR product lines, enabling Mitsui Chemicals to enhance supply stability and better serve growing international markets.
Through its Vision Care Materials Division, Mitsui Chemicals said it remains committed to developing products that support vision correction while improving eye health and comfort.
The company’s efforts are guided by its Quality of View (QoV) concept and aligned with the Mitsui Chemicals Group’s mission of bringing people a better view of the world.
