New formulation supports regulatory compliance, enhances worker safety, and maintains lens durability
PPG launches PPG HI-GARD non-methanol hard coating for 1.5 standard index ophthalmic lenses. Designed as a drop-in replacement for traditional methanol-based coatings, the new formulation helps prescription lens manufacturers meet evolving global regulatory requirements while delivering the same durability and scratch-resistant performance as existing PPG Hi-Gard solutions.
By eliminating methanol—an acutely toxic solvent restricted under REACH regulations in the European Union and subject to strict exposure limits under the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)—the coating improves workplace safety and reduces compliance burdens. Manufacturers can also streamline operations by lowering the need for intensive personal protective equipment, such as supplied-air respirators, typically required with methanol-based coatings.
As part of the complete system, PPG also offers a complementary non-methanol replenishment solvent designed to maintain optimal coating viscosity as solids fluctuate during production. This feature enables consistent process control, supports high-quality output, and ensures seamless integration with existing hard coating and replenishment systems.
“With increasing regulatory pressure and growing customer demand for safer alternatives, it is essential that manufacturers have access to high-performance, compliant solutions,” said Flora Wu, PPG senior group leader, optical monomers and coatings, Specialty Products. “The PPG Hi-Gard Non-Methanol coating provides a reliable alternative that enhances worker protection, supports regulatory compliance, and maintains the durability performance lens makers expect from PPG.”
PPG has more than 70 years of expertise in optical monomers and coatings and is recognized as a leading global supplier to the ophthalmic lens industry. The introduction of PPG Hi-Gard Non-Methanol reflects the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and helping customers navigate regulatory changes with minimal disruption.
“As global restrictions on methanol continue to expand, we remain focused on developing differentiated solutions that enable our customers to stay ahead of evolving legislation,” Wu added. “The Hi-Gard Non-Methanol coating strengthens lens durability while advancing both workplace safety and sustainability goals.”
