The partnership targets next-generation display and head-up display solutions for customers worldwide

Surventis, formerly BASF Coatings, has struck a strategic development and collaboration agreement with AUMOVIO to accelerate the development of microstructured optical films for automotive applications under its Chemetall brand.

The partnership targets next-generation display and head-up display solutions for customers worldwide, as automakers ramp up investment in advanced vehicle interfaces amid the shift toward electrification and autonomous mobility.

As vehicles become increasingly software- and display-driven, demand is growing for optical components that deliver high performance while remaining cost-efficient and scalable. Surventis and AUMOVIO aim to address that demand by combining advanced optical-film technology with automotive system integration and manufacturing expertise.

“Automotive applications represent an important growth area for our functional films business,” said Frank Naber, Executive Vice President, Surface Treatment, Surventis. “Microstructured optical films open up new possibilities for light management in automotive displays, and head-up displays. By partnering with AUMOVIO, we bring innovative optical solutions into future vehicle platforms more efficiently.”

The collaboration brings together Surventis’ expertise in designing and manufacturing microstructured optical films with AUMOVIO’s capabilities in automotive displays, head-up displays and vehicle-system integration.

“Advanced display technologies are becoming increasingly important for the in-vehicle user experience,” said Ulrich Lueders, Director Strategy and Portfolio of the User Experience (UX) business area at AUMOVIO. “By combining Surventis’ competencies in microstructured optical films with our expertise in automotive integration and manufacturing, we can translate new optical concepts into scalable solutions for the requirements of future mobility.”

Surventis combines materials science and optical expertise with nanoimprint technology to produce sophisticated optical micro- and nanostructures over large areas. Its scalable roll-to-roll nanoimprinting process is designed to enable high-precision replication of structures that can improve optical performance, functionality and design flexibility in future automotive UX systems.

AUMOVIO, meanwhile, brings expertise in advanced automotive displays and head-up display systems, along with the integration capabilities needed to incorporate new technologies into vehicle interiors while meeting automotive standards and OEM requirements.

The companies have already established concrete development steps and initial industrialization milestones aimed at moving the technology toward implementation.

“Working together with AUMOVIO is an important step in advancing the adoption of optical films in automotive applications. By combining our material science and optical expertise with AUMOVIO’s capabilities in automotive system integration and series implementation, we can accelerate the development of innovative solutions for future vehicle programs,” said Brian Ward, Head of Global Strategy & Marketing, Surface Treatment, Surventis.

The partners see optical films as an alternative to conventional optical components, with potential to improve light distribution and readability while enabling new functions in displays and projection systems.
