Siemens will deploy a physics-based digital twin that mirrors the plant’s processes and uses live operational data to help operators make faster, data-driven decisions

Siemens is partnering with Portugal-based energy company Galp Energia to digitally optimise one of Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen projects, deploying advanced software designed to improve plant performance, cut energy costs and accelerate industrial decarbonisation.

The collaboration will focus on GalpH2Park in Sines, Portugal, which is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2026. The first phase will feature a 100 MW renewable hydrogen facility, expected to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 110,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year.

At the heart of the project is Siemens’ Hydrogen Performance Suite (HPS), a digital platform designed to optimise hydrogen production through real-time data analysis, predictive modelling and automated operational insights.

Siemens will deploy a physics-based digital twin that mirrors the plant’s processes and uses live operational data to help operators make faster, data-driven decisions.

The system will integrate plant data with information from external sources, including electricity grid operators and energy markets, giving Galp’s operators a comprehensive view of the facility. The technology is designed to improve production scheduling, optimise energy procurement and strengthen the plant’s overall operational efficiency.

Siemens estimates that the Hydrogen Performance Suite could deliver energy savings of up to 15%, potentially improving the cost competitiveness of renewable hydrogen while supporting emissions reduction targets.

"GalpH2Park is a lighthouse for Europe's energy transition”, said Axel Lorenz, Executive Vice President Automation Process Industries at Siemens. “We are convinced that digital innovation is the key to making renewable hydrogen economically viable and accelerating the decarbonization of industry. Siemens is turning this ambition into industrial reality – at scale."

The plant will be powered by renewable electricity secured through long-term supply agreements and Galp’s own renewable generation capacity.

Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, with projected emissions reductions of around 110,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year under Scope 1 emissions.

The project is expected to contribute to Portugal’s and Europe’s decarbonisation ambitions as industries seek alternatives to fossil fuels and ways to reduce their carbon footprints.

The project highlights Siemens’ broader push to apply digitalisation and automation technologies to the emerging hydrogen industry. Its portfolio includes monitoring and control systems, industrial automation, digital twins, power protection and distribution, drives and digital services.

By combining electrification, advanced instrumentation and software-driven optimisation, Siemens aims to help hydrogen producers improve efficiency and move towards commercially viable, large-scale renewable hydrogen production.

For Galp, the Sines project represents a major step in expanding renewable hydrogen capacity. For Siemens, it provides an industrial-scale application of digital technology designed to make hydrogen production more efficient and competitive.
