AGEL reached it within a decade of commissioning its first project at Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has stormed past 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational renewable energy capacity, marking a major milestone that cements its position as India’s largest renewable energy company.

The achievement makes AGEL the first in the country to cross the threshold largely through greenfield development.

The company now produces more than 52 billion units of clean electricity every year—about 3% of India’s total power consumption. That output is enough to meet the annual electricity needs of New York City, or nearly the combined demand of Mumbai and New Delhi.

What makes the milestone sharper is the speed: AGEL reached it within a decade of commissioning its first project at Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016. Since then, it has built India’s largest and fastest greenfield renewable capacity expansion. In FY26 alone, the company added 5,051 MW—reportedly the highest annual renewable capacity addition by any company outside China.

Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEL, said: "Surpassing 20 GW demonstrates what disciplined execution and long-term vision can achieve. Today, AGEL, along with our efficient team and longstanding partners, delivers renewable electricity almost equivalent to annual power requirement of Mumbai and New Delhi combined, reinforcing the country's energy security while accelerating its clean energy transition."

The milestone follows Adani’s remarks at the inaugural Adani Green Energy Dialogue on June 26 during London Climate Action Week at The Science Museum in London, where he underscored the role of large-scale storage in enabling round-the-clock renewable power and strengthening energy security.

AGEL’s operational portfolio now includes around 14.2 GW of solar, 2.7 GW of wind, and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid capacity. The company has also commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), the largest deployment of its kind outside China and among the fastest globally.

"As renewable energy assumes a larger share of India's power mix, battery storage is becoming central to delivering reliable, dispatchable clean power, " Adani added. AGEL plans to expand aggressively, targeting 10 GWh of additional battery storage in FY27 and 50 GWh over the next five years, aligning with its broader goal of reaching 50 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
