The project underscores growing efforts to strengthen domestic production of nitrogen-based fertilizers

AdvanSix has been selected for $47.4 million in proposed federal funding to expand ammonia production at its Hopewell, Virginia, manufacturing facility, in a major investment aimed at strengthening America's domestic fertilizer supply and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

The proposed grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), awarded through its Fertilizer Investment & Expansion for Long-Term Domestic Supply (FIELDS) programme, will support Project CENTURY — a planned $98.1 million, multi-year modernisation and expansion initiative expected to increase the facility's annual ammonia production capacity by approximately 84,000 tons.

The project builds on nearly a century of manufacturing operations in Hopewell and underscores growing efforts to strengthen domestic production of nitrogen-based fertilizers, a critical input for American agriculture.

AdvanSix, a vertically integrated chemical manufacturer, said the investment will expand its ability to supply American farmers while improving the resilience of the country's fertilizer supply chain.

“For nearly a century, our teammates in Hopewell have proudly manufactured essential products here in America, including the nutrients farmers depend on to grow the food that feeds our families and communities,” said Erin Kane, President and CEO of AdvanSix.

“We are proud to invest in American manufacturing, support American jobs and expand domestic fertilizer production for farmers across the country. We appreciate the Trump Administration and Secretary Rollins’ partnership and commitment to strengthening U.S. manufacturing and American agriculture through Project CENTURY.”

The AdvanSix project is among eight initiatives selected by the Trump Administration to advance through the FIELDS funding process. Together, the projects represent more than $1.34 billion in proposed investment, backed by approximately $573 million in proposed USDA funding.

The federal initiative aims to increase domestic fertilizer manufacturing, reduce reliance on overseas suppliers and secure long-term fertilizer availability for American farmers.

The Hopewell expansion also carries significant economic implications for Virginia. AdvanSix's existing operations support approximately 1,000 skilled manufacturing employees and contribute to the local economy.

Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan said the proposed federal investment would strengthen domestic manufacturing while supporting jobs and agricultural communities.

“American agricultural infrastructure relies on a stable and secure fertilizer supply chain,” said Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan. “This FIELDS grant award would help provide that stability by allowing AdvanSix to improve its domestic manufacturing capabilities, promote economic development and support working families. Federal investments like this serve as a common-sense way to reduce our reliance on volatile foreign markets and help provide to our farmers the essential resources they need.”
