The move comes as geopolitical tensions and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz

ICL, a leading global specialty minerals company, has unveiled a new specialty fertilizer production facility in Maharashtra, as the country grapples with critical supply disruptions.

The move comes as geopolitical tensions and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—a key shipping corridor—threaten fertilizer shipments worldwide, raising concerns over food security. By producing Water Soluble Fertilizers (WSF) locally, ICL aims to cut dependence on imports, diversify supply chains, and ensure reliable access for Indian farmers.

“Establishing this manufacturing plant in India is a strategic step in scaling our specialty fertilizer production platform,” said Nir Ilani, President of the Growing Solutions Division of ICL.

“With geopolitical tensions disrupting global trade routes and delaying fertilizer shipments through a key corridor such as the Strait of Hormuz, building local production capacity is essential. This facility enhances India’s supply resilience and ensures farmers have consistent access to high-quality solutions.”

Spanning seven acres (28,000 square meters), the facility will replicate ICL’s advanced production model from Israel, producing precision WSF solutions that boost nutrient efficiency and yields. With India’s WSF market showing a high single-digit annual growth rate, the plant is expected to support sustainable farming practices while strengthening long-term food security.

The launch aligns with the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative and underscores ICL’s strategy to expand local production in high-growth markets. The company has maintained over 30 years of partnerships in India, generating around $250 million in annual revenues.

ICL said the new facility will help the company navigate global supply disruptions, deepen local customer relationships, and respond more effectively to agronomic needs in India.
