Ahlstrom Oyj is accelerating its industrial decarbonization push in Italy after signing multiyear biomethane supply agreements with two energy producers—among the largest volumes of their kind in the country signed directly with producers.

The deals span seven biomethane plants and will partially replace fossil natural gas with renewable biomethane across Ahlstrom’s Italian operations. The fuel will be used as a drop-in solution in existing infrastructure, enabling immediate emissions cuts without major equipment changes.

Italy is a significant hub for the company, accounting for roughly 13% of its asset base and 9% of its workforce, making the agreement a central pillar of its broader transition strategy.

The biomethane supplied under the contracts is certified with guarantees of renewable origin under recognized schemes. According to the company, the shift is expected to drive a major reduction in Scope 1 emissions from combustion processes.

The impact is substantial: the agreements are projected to cut emissions by around 44% across Ahlstrom’s industrial operations in Italy, avoiding approximately 65,000 tonnes of CO2e annually based on the fossil gas replaced.

Juan García‑Marquina Prieto of the company framed the move as a practical acceleration of the company’s energy strategy.

“This agreement represents a concrete step in the execution of our industrial energy transition strategy,” said Prieto, Vice President Energy Procurement and Energy Transition at Ahlstrom. “By replacing part of our natural gas consumption with biomethane, we are achieving immediate and scalable CO2 reductions while making use of existing assets and infrastructure.”

On the ground, operational leaders emphasized the day-to-day impact.

“At site level, the transition to biomethane translates ambition into action,” said Marco Bellezza, Head of Special Projects, FLS & Technical Manager. “By integrating biomethane into day-to-day operations in our operations in Italy, we are reducing fossil fuel use while maintaining reliability and operational efficiency. It is a practical step that supports both our local operations and Ahlstrom’s climate targets.”

Beyond Ahlstrom’s own operations, the agreements highlight biomethane’s growing role in Europe’s industrial energy transition, as long-term contracts between manufacturers and renewable energy producers gain momentum—supported by policy signals aimed at accelerating low-carbon fuels.
