Cobirgy is expected to deliver more than 230 GWh of biomethane annually
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has reached final investment decision (FID) on Cobirgy, a large-scale biogas facility set to become one of the biggest of its kind in Spain.
The project, located in La Sentiu de Sió in Lérida, Catalonia, will be developed through CIP’s Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (ABF I) and marks the fund’s fifth investment and third outside Denmark. With this milestone, ABF I is moving steadily toward deploying its EUR 727 million in committed capital.
Cobirgy is expected to deliver more than 230 GWh of biomethane annually—positioning it as the highest-output biogas plant in Spain to date. Alongside energy production, it will generate around 150,000 tonnes per year of soil improver and organic fertiliser, using agricultural and organic waste as feedstock.
The project is designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce local nitrate pollution through advanced processing technology.
The Catalonian government has designated Cobirgy a Strategic Business Project and is supporting it with a CAPEX grant, underscoring its regional and national significance.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with operations expected by the end of 2028. Once fully running, the facility will process up to 500,000 tonnes of feedstock annually. More than 350 local farmers have already signed on, with over 80% of slurry expected to come from farms within a 15-kilometre radius—anchoring the project firmly in the local agricultural ecosystem.
Thomas Dalsgaard, Partner at CIP and Lead Partner for ABF, says of the new investment: “We are excited to enter the Spanish bioenergy market with Cobirgy, ABF’s first investment in Spain. It is an important step for the fund and will make a significant contribution to Spain’s energy security and decarbonisation, create local jobs and drive investments across the agricultural sector and surrounding rural communities.
"We look forward to progressing the project and entering the construction phase in close collaboration with local farmers, development partners and authorities.”
