GAIL (India) Limited, a Maharatna PSU, has signed a long-term charter agreement with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd (MOL), Tokyo, for the LNG carrier “GAIL BHUWAN.” The deal was finalized on January 27 during India Energy Week 2026 in Goa.

The agreement was signed by S Bairagi, Executive Director (International Shipping & LNG), GAIL, and Hisashi Umemura, Director General, Headquarters of Energy Business, MOL, in the presence of GAIL’s CMD, functional directors, and MOL dignitaries.

GAIL and MOL share a long-standing business partnership, and this latest collaboration “further strengthens cooperation in LNG shipping and energy logistics.”

The contract was signed between GAIL (India) Limited and LNG Japonica Shipping Corporation Limited, a joint venture between GAIL (26%) and MOL (74%).

Relying on MOL’s reputation for “proven track record in providing reliable transportation services—including its high standards of safety and quality—and strong partnership,” the agreement is a milestone under India’s ‘Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047,’ reinforcing the country’s maritime and energy supply chain capabilities.

Both companies are also committed to sustainability, with the deal contributing to “the realization of a low- and decarbonized society.”

GAIL is India’s leading natural gas company, operating a network of over 18,001 km of pipelines and a diversified LNG portfolio that ensures long-term supply security. The company has also built India’s largest LNG fleet, strengthening the nation’s maritime capabilities and domestic energy supply.

MOL has identified Asia, and India in particular, as key to its “BLUE ACTION 2035” regional strategy. Through projects like this, MOL aims to support growing energy demand and contribute to a stable energy supply.
