Petrobras, PetroReconcavo, Brava Energia and Origem Energia have extended their natural gas processing agreements at the Catu Natural Gas Treatment Unit (UTG Catu) in Bahia, securing long-term access to the facility and greater predictability for gas producers.
The companies signed contract addenda covering access to gas processing at the unit, located in Pojuca, Bahia, and operated by Petrobras. The agreements take immediate effect and are designed to ensure continuity in processing gas produced from the state’s onshore fields.
A key element of the deal is the extension of the processing capacity guarantee period from 2028, strengthening supply and operational planning for the companies using the facility.
The Catu unit is a critical part of Bahia’s natural gas infrastructure, supporting the processing and transportation of gas from the state’s onshore fields while contributing to regional economic activity and energy security.
"In Bahia, this initiative contributes to attracting investment, optimizing existing resources, and creating favorable conditions for the sector's long-term growth," assesses Stênio Galvão, Petrobras' Executive Manager of Exploration and Production.
The revised agreements also update commercial and operational terms, with a focus on cutting costs and improving the use of existing gas infrastructure.
“The understanding between the companies reaffirms the importance of shared infrastructure as an instrument to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the natural gas market,” states Álvaro Tupiassu, Executive Manager of Gas and Energy at Petrobras.
The agreement underscores the growing importance of shared infrastructure as Brazil’s natural gas market becomes more competitive, allowing producers to improve efficiency without duplicating existing assets.
"The cooperation between Petrobras and independent producers represents progress for our sector. By strengthening the sharing of existing infrastructure, the agreement enhances the competitiveness of Brazilian onshore oil and gas by increasing operational efficiency, enhancing unit reliability, and promoting the continuous modernization of processes, systems, and equipment," says José Firmo, CEO of PetroReconcavo.
The companies said the long-term arrangement will support continued investment and operational reliability while contributing to the development of Bahia’s energy sector and a more open, competitive and efficient natural gas market.
