Petrovietnam Chemical and Services Corporation (PVChem) and German industrial gas specialist Messer SE & Co have officially signed a joint venture (JV) to establish Cái Mép Industrial Gases Co, a $35 million project set to transform Vietnam’s industrial gas sector.

The new plant, located in Cái Mép Industrial Park, Ho Chi Minh City, will have an annual production capacity of 200,000 tons. Construction is slated to begin by the end of 2026, with commercial operations expected by late 2028.

Designed around green and circular economy principles, the facility will leverage cold energy from PVGas’s LNG storage system for deep refrigeration during gas separation.

The plant will use European Cryogenic Air Separation (CAS) technology combined with cold energy recovery from LNG regasification—slashing electricity and water consumption while enhancing environmental performance, as per a release.

“This joint venture is a concrete step in realizing Petrovietnam’s green energy and circular economy strategy, aligned with Vietnam’s carbon neutrality goals,” said Le Manh Hung, Chairman of Petrovietnam.

Messer’s leadership echoed the sentiment. Bernd Eulitz, CEO of Messer SE & Co. KGaA, said the project marks the company’s first global cold energy recovery solution for air separation units, optimizing energy efficiency and meeting European environmental standards.

Stefan Messer, Chairman of Messer’s Supervisory Board, called it a “game-changer for Vietnam’s industry, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing low-carbon industrial gases for economic and medical use.”

Truong Dai Nghia, Chairman of PVChem, added that the partnership strengthens PVChem’s expansion into green manufacturing, enhances linkages within Petrovietnam, and promotes sustainable value chains.
