TotalEnergies and its partners have approved the final investment decision (FID) for the development of the Umm Shaif Gas Cap project, a major offshore gas initiative in Abu Dhabi that is set to significantly boost the United Arab Emirates’ gas production capacity.
The project, located within the Umm Shaif and Nasr offshore concession, will unlock more than 600 million cubic feet per day of gas production by 2030 while maximizing condensate recovery from gas resources located above the field’s oil reservoirs.
TotalEnergies holds a 20% stake in the concession alongside ADNOC (60%), CNPC (10%) and ENI (10%), with ADNOC Offshore serving as operator.
Umm Shaif, Abu Dhabi’s oldest offshore field, has been producing since 1962. The new development will tap additional gas resources by using existing offshore infrastructure and electricity from the UAE grid, helping reduce costs and limit emissions.
The project also carries the potential for further expansion, with future production capacity capable of reaching up to 1.5 billion cubic feet per day, supporting the UAE’s long-term strategy to strengthen domestic gas supplies and its integrated energy value chain.
The FID builds on the 2018 award of the Umm Shaif and Nasr concession for a 40-year term and reinforces TotalEnergies’ role as Asset Lead in partnership with ADNOC and other stakeholders to unlock additional value from the concession.
"We are delighted to reach this important milestone together with ADNOC and our partners. Following the recent award of the Bab Gas Cap concession, this FID marks another important step in developing Abu Dhabi's significant gas resources. This development will contribute to TotalEnergies' Upstream production beyond 2030 with low-cost and low-emissions resources,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
