The 937-km cross-country crude oil pipeline plays a key role in meeting the country’s rising energy demand

Global automation giant ABB India has completed a major modernization of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) Vadinar–Bina Pipeline (VBPL), a critical artery in India’s energy network that delivers 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum to the Bina refinery.

The 937-km cross-country crude oil pipeline plays a key role in meeting the country’s rising energy demand.

The project involved a comprehensive upgrade of the pipeline’s automation and monitoring backbone, including deployment of ABB Ability SCADAvantage, replacement of 35 Remote Terminal Units across pumping, pigging and sectionalizing valve stations, and installation of new SCADA servers at both Vadinar and Bina.

ABB also strengthened cyber security and operational resilience through enhanced network protection, system hardening and centralized monitoring.

“We are proud to have partnered with ABB on the modernization of the Vadinar-Bina pipeline, completed seamlessly without any shutdowns,” said Rajshekhar S, Head (Pipelines), Vadinar Bina Pipeline, BPCL.

“The project strengthened our cyber security and system resilience, greatly enhancing the reliability of the entire pipeline infrastructure. With failover capability and disaster recovery servers implemented at both Vadinar and Bina, we now have robust support to maintain uninterrupted operations even in challenging conditions.”

ABB executed the entire modernization without disrupting pipeline operations or refinery supply, a critical achievement for infrastructure of this scale.

“The VBPL is an important asset for the nation’s energy supply when energy demand is only increasing,” said G Balaji, SVP at ABB India’s Energy Industries division.

“ABB executed the modernization of the pipeline without any operational disruption, ensuring continuous flow and uninterrupted refinery operations throughout the project. This achievement underscores our commitment to delivering future-ready, resilient technology for India’s most critical energy infrastructure.”

The VBPL upgrade builds on ABB’s long-standing collaboration with BPCL, with ABB automation solutions now deployed across approximately 66 percent of BPCL’s pipeline network.
