Celanese Corporation is tightening its global manufacturing footprint, announcing a decisive production network overhaul in its Engineered Materials business as part of its “Grow & Fortify” strategy.
The company said it is moving to strengthen supply reliability and streamline operations after years of investment in advanced compounding capabilities worldwide. That strategy now comes with a sharp structural change.
Celanese confirmed it will shut down its Engineered Materials compounding facility in Ulsan, South Korea, ceasing all manufacturing and production operations there immediately. The company said it will continue supporting customers through the transition, ensuring contractual commitments are met and production is smoothly shifted across its regional network.
Production volumes from Ulsan will be redirected to Celanese facilities in Nanjing and Shenzhen, China, as well as Silvassa, India. The company said the move is designed to “fortify the operating structure of its Engineered Materials business,” while optimizing costs and leveraging its established compounding hubs across Asia.
Celanese said the reconfiguration will also strengthen its regional supply chain as it concentrates production in higher-capacity, strategically located sites closer to demand centers.
The company highlighted that its engineered materials portfolio—including PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), PA (Polyamide), PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) and HTN (High-Temperature Nylon)—remains central to industrial and regional growth across Asia, which it described as a key expansion market.
Celanese emphasized that it is building manufacturing and compounding capabilities closer to customers to better serve rising demand, positioning its Asian operations as a core growth engine.
The company described itself as a global leader in chemistry, with approximately 11,000 employees worldwide and 2025 net sales of $9.5 billion, supplying specialty materials across major industries and consumer applications.
Celanese said it continues to focus on sustainability, portfolio expansion, and operational efficiency as it reshapes its global footprint for long-term growth.
