ExxonMobil Guyana has launched a major teacher-training programme as the first phase of its US$100 million, 10-year investment aimed at strengthening science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education across the country.

 

The Guyana STEM Teacher Training: Enhancing Learning, Leadership and Academic Rigour (STELLAR) programme will initially train 60 pre-service secondary-school educators through the Cyril Potter College of Education.

 

The first cohort began training in August 2026 and will spend the next two years developing advanced mathematics and science expertise, evidence-based teaching methods and leadership skills. A second cohort is scheduled to enter the programme in August 2027, further expanding its reach.

 

The STELLAR programme forms the first pillar of ExxonMobil's broader Guyana STEM Initiative, which focuses on three areas: teacher training, student opportunities and career pathways.

 

"Exceptional STEM education begins with exceptional educators," said Alvin Abraham, ExxonMobil Global Manager of Corporate Giving. "These teachers will help inspire the next generation of STEM learners, innovators and leaders across Guyana."

 

The initiative will extend beyond teacher development. ExxonMobil Foundation Guyana plans to establish STEM Centers offering students hands-on learning opportunities, with the first centre expected to open in Georgetown in 2029.

 

The centres will be modelled on the ExxonMobil Foundation's Teen Engineering and Tech Centers (TETCs), drawing on approaches developed through the Foundation's STEM education programmes for young people.

 

ExxonMobil said the combination of trained educators and dedicated hands-on learning facilities is designed to create a stronger STEM pipeline in Guyana—from classrooms and practical learning to future careers.

 

The investment positions teacher development as the starting point of a broader effort to build Guyana's future STEM workforce.
