Continued expansion of immersion cooling fluid supply and development of related technologies
GS Caltex announced the launch of Kixx DLC Fluid PG25, a direct liquid cooling (DLC) aimed at improving energy efficiency in the data center industry.
Kixx DLC Fluid PG25 was developed using propylene glycol, widely used in cosmetics, to minimize impact on people and the environment, along with organic acid technology (OAT) additives that provide superior protection against corrosion.
With this latest release, GS Caltex has entered the market on two fronts: immersion cooling and DLC.
DLC manages the thermal output of high-heat electronic components such as CPUs and GPUs in servers by circulating DLC fluid through cooling plates. Together with immersion cooling, which submerges electronic equipment in fluid, these two methods have recently emerged as key technologies in the data center industry.
Both immersion cooling and DLC offer higher energy efficiency than traditional air cooling. The former is effective at the server level, while the latter is well suited for localized cooling of heat-intensive components such as CPUs and GPUs. Data center operators can select either method according to their specific purpose and operating environment.
Prior to launching the new DLC fluid, GS Caltex introduced Korea’s first immersion cooling fluid, Kixx Immersion Fluid S, in 2023. Since then, it has been working with domestic and global companies in the data center ecosystem to advance immersion cooling technology, conduct product validation, and expand the market.
GS Caltex supplied and validated its immersion cooling fluid at a Samsung SDS data center in 2024 and to LG Uplus’s Pyeongchon data center this year. The company also built an immersion cooling system at the GS Caltex R&D Center in Daejeon, in collaboration with Supermicro, a U.S.-based global server manufacturer. It is currently conducting in-house evaluation of thermal management performance and stability using AI servers.
Additionally, GS Caltex signed an MOU with GS E&C and SDT in September to pursue the development and validation of immersion cooling technology aimed at reducing energy consumption in data centers.
Under the agreement, GS Caltex will supply immersion cooling fluid and provide the necessary technical solutions across the full product life cycle. GS E&C will develop and validate data center design technology that integrates large-scale immersion cooling systems with prefabricated construction methods, in which pre-built modules are assembled on-site. SDT will supply its immersion cooling system, AquaRack, secure validation data, and verify energy savings through system demonstrations and optimization.
