LG Chem will supply photopolymer films within the ZEISS Microoptics enabling ecosystem to support integration into automotive windshields and enable Holographic Windshield Display (HWD) functionality

LG Chem, a global leader in advanced materials, and ZEISS, a world-renowned expert in optics and photonics, have announced a strategic alliance to establish a robust, sustainable, and innovative industrial-scale supply of photopolymer films for advanced optical applications. This partnership marks a major milestone for the optical industry, laying the foundation for the next generation of holographic technologies in mobility and beyond.

Under the agreement, LG Chem will supply photopolymer films within the ZEISS Microoptics Enabling Ecosystem to support integration into automotive windshields and enable Holographic Windshield Display (HWD) functionality. The first series production for automotive OEMs is targeted for 2029.

A signing ceremony was held at LG Chem’s Yeouido Twin Towers, attended by key representatives including Vice President Ko Kyung-deok, Head of Electronics Materials Business Unit at LG Chem; Stephan Höfer, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Development and Marketing at ZEISS Microoptics; and Dr. Viktor Schütz, Vice President and Head of Partnership Management at ZEISS Microoptics.

Through this collaboration, both companies aim to secure a stable material supply chain for the emerging “Holography” industry. The partnership will ensure consistent availability of high-performance optical materials for various applications, including automotive displays, holographic sensor systems, and consumer technologies, even during periods of market uncertainty. By coordinating supply chain integration and inventory management, LG Chem and ZEISS will help automotive OEM programs maintain smooth operations and secure long-term serial production capabilities worldwide.

The collaboration extends beyond material supply, focusing on co-development of customized photopolymer solutions tailored to ZEISS’s optical and holographic standards. This agile approach enables both companies to respond swiftly to evolving customer needs and market trends. Customers will benefit from a resilient supply of high-quality optical and holographic solutions designed for performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

LG Chem contributes decades of expertise in polymer synthesis, liquid formulation, and precision coating, backed by over 150 patents and a proven record in optical material innovation. ZEISS brings extensive know-how in microoptics, holography, and high-precision optical systems, ensuring transparency and traceability within its global ZEISS Microoptics Enabling Ecosystem. Both companies emphasize responsible sourcing and energy-efficient manufacturing processes to support sustainable growth in the photonics industry.

Photopolymers play a crucial role in the development of Holographic Windshield Displays—an emerging display technology that transforms the windshield into a transparent, multifunctional display. These advanced displays provide real-time driving information, navigation, and entertainment while offering multi-display functionality across different areas of the windshield for a personalized user experience.

Dr. Viktor Schütz, Vice President and Head of Partnership Management at ZEISS Microoptics, stated, “With LG Chem at our side, the ZEISS Microoptics Enabling Ecosystem will deliver reliable, advanced photopolymers at scale for transparent automotive displays. By focusing on innovation, technical standards, and supply continuity, we help customers tackle the toughest optical challenges in automotive and beyond.”

Shin Hak-cheol, CEO of LG Chem, added, “Our partnership with ZEISS is a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing competitiveness through advanced optical technologies, beyond simple material supply. LG Chem will lead the innovation of automotive displays with differentiated optical material solutions.”

This alliance between LG Chem and ZEISS represents a forward-looking step toward shaping the future of holography, optical materials, and next-generation display technologies in the mobility sector and other industries.
