RAB Lighting is pushing deeper into sustainable manufacturing, pairing compact, lightweight luminaire design with recycled and bio-based materials to cut emissions across its product line.

A key part of that strategy is the use of Röhm’s PLEXIGLAS proTerra 8N molding compound for products destined for European and Asian markets, a polymethyl methacrylate grade that incorporates attributed bio-circular raw materials to reduce its CO₂e footprint.

The PLEXIGLAS proTerra 8N material replaces a portion of fossil resources with ISCC PLUS-certified sustainable feedstocks, allocated through a mass balance approach. ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) is an independent certification system covering bio-based, renewable, and circular raw materials.

Crucially, the material is chemically identical to standard PLEXIGLAS 8N used in optical applications, meaning it delivers the same performance characteristics while reducing emissions.

According to life cycle analysis, it achieves a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from raw material extraction through production and transport up to the factory gate. The drop-in nature of the material allows manufacturers to switch grades without redesigning products or altering production processes, while maintaining consistent optical quality.

Stephen Osborne, Director of Engineering at RAB Lighting, said: “We are continuously expanding our use of lower-impact materials that meet RAB’s standards for optical clarity, performance, and long-term durability. PLEXIGLAS proTerra 8N fits this approach. It provides a carbon-reduced option without sacrificing the reliability our customers expect.”

Sustainability is also central to RAB Lighting’s C-WALL series, a new generation of wall-mounted luminaires designed for versatility and reduced environmental impact. The fixtures combine recycled aluminum housings with PLEXIGLAS proTerra 8N covers, helping lower the overall CO₂e footprint compared with conventional wall pack designs.

The C-WALL’s design also focuses on visual comfort. LED modules are positioned at the top of the fixture rather than the rear, directing light downward to reduce glare.

An aluminum reflector shapes the beam, while the textured luminaire cover works with the material’s optical properties to create a uniform lighting effect. The system delivers 92% light transmission alongside strong light-guiding performance, as well as long-term UV and weather resistance.

Beyond its clear transparent grade, Röhm’s PLEXIGLAS proTerra range also includes light-diffusing and deep black variants for broader design flexibility.
