The latest expansion includes the inauguration of a second float glass production line at Ain Sokhna
French construction materials major Saint-Gobain is stepping up its expansion in Egypt with two major production investments, doubling its float glass capacity at Ain Sokhna and preparing to open a new plasterboard manufacturing facility in Sadat City in November.
The investments are aimed at accelerating profitable growth in a market driven by rapid urbanisation, population growth and ambitious plans to develop new cities.
The latest expansion includes the inauguration of a second float glass production line at Ain Sokhna, operated through a joint venture between Saint-Gobain and Şişecam. The new line doubles the site’s production capacity, strengthening the group’s manufacturing footprint in Egypt.
The second project will see the launch of a plasterboard manufacturing facility in Sadat City next month, operated through a joint venture between Saint-Gobain and Dalsan. Strategically located along Egypt’s key urban development corridor, the facility will be integrated with the group’s existing plaster line, creating a comprehensive gypsum solutions hub to improve customer service.
Saint-Gobain, which entered Egypt in 2006, operates four major manufacturing hubs in the country, employs around 900 people and generates annual revenue of approximately €150 million. Its revenues in Egypt have tripled over the past eight years.
The new investments also broaden the group’s presence in the country, extending its portfolio into plasterboard while building on its established positions in glass, plaster and construction chemicals.
The expansion comes as Egypt’s construction sector benefits from strong demographic and urbanisation trends. The country plans to build 37 new smart cities by 2050 to accommodate an expected 30% increase in its population of 120 million over the period.
These long-term development plans are creating opportunities for construction materials manufacturers as demand grows for building solutions that support large-scale urban development.
Saint-Gobain said the investments reinforce its position in Egypt as a leader in light and sustainable construction, while aligning with its broader strategy to accelerate profitable growth.
Both projects form part of the company’s “Lead & Grow” strategic plan, which focuses on expanding its business while strengthening its position in high-growth markets.
