Cutting emissions & doubling furnace capacity at Moerdijk

Technip Energies has delivered a major industrial upgrade at Technip Energies’ Shell Skyline project at Shell Chemicals Park Moerdijk, successfully modernizing the site’s 16 oldest ethane furnaces in its steam cracker unit.

The Engineering, Procurement and Module Fabrication contract re-engineered the system using a multi-lane coil design that effectively doubled the capacity of each furnace.

The result is a leaner configuration—cutting the total number of furnaces to eight—while preserving full cracking capacity. The revamped units reached Ready For Start-Up (RFSU) by the end of 2025.

The project was driven by a clear set of priorities: stronger energy performance, lower emissions, improved safety, and reduced environmental impact. It is expected to deliver around a 10 percent annual reduction in CO₂ emissions at the plant, aligning with broader energy transition goals.

The approach also enabled faster execution with no disruption to ongoing production, thanks to extensive modularization that minimized on-site work and HSE exposure.

Cost efficiency was another key advantage, with the modular upgrade offering a lower investment threshold compared to a greenfield build, while avoiding the risks of major shutdowns in an operating facility.

More than an upgrade, the Shell Skyline project underscores Technip Energies’ role in tackling complex retrofit challenges in live industrial environments. The company continues to position itself at the forefront of technologies aimed at reducing the carbon intensity of energy systems.
