Targets meeting surging demand for down alternatives

Teijin Frontier is ramping up production of its OCTAIR polyester insulation fiber with a new investment at its Matsuyama Plant in Ehime Prefecture, as demand accelerates for high-performance alternatives to natural down in apparel and bedding.

The Teijin Group company said it will invest several hundred million yen in new pre-processing, spinning and drawing equipment, significantly boosting its ability to supply OCTAIR products to global markets. Commercial production on the new line is scheduled to begin in March 2027.

The expansion comes as manufacturers increasingly seek substitutes for down amid supply constraints and rising costs. Developed by Teijin Frontier in 2024, OCTAIR has quickly gained attention for delivering down-like thermal performance while offering the durability and processing advantages of synthetic fibers.

OCTAIR features a distinctive hollow, eight-fin cross-sectional structure with radiating protrusions, enabling thermal insulation comparable to down of the same weight.

The fiber also provides exceptional loft, lightweight performance and a soft, supple feel, while maintaining dimensional stability. In addition, its structure allows for a smoother blowing-in process than conventional polyester fiberfill.

To capitalize on growing market demand, Teijin Frontier plans to expand its OCTAIR portfolio through large-scale production of multiple material variants, including products containing polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) fibers and recycled polyester fibers.

The new manufacturing equipment will complement existing production operations and strengthen the company's ability to deliver stable, scalable supplies of the insulation fiber. Annual output is expected to begin at several hundred tons and increase to approximately 1,000 tons by 2030.

The investment underscores Teijin Frontier's push to establish OCTAIR as a next-generation insulation solution as brands and consumers increasingly look beyond traditional down.
