Veolia powers up AI future with 350-MW grid-independent microgrid in Ohio

Veolia is stepping deeper into the race to power America’s artificial intelligence boom, after being selected to operate and maintain a 350-megawatt grid-independent microgrid designed to supply 100% of the power for a major AI data center campus in Ohio.
 
The project marks a major expansion of Veolia’s role in the data center energy market and builds on its Data Center Resource 360 offering, launched earlier this year to help operators manage rising energy, water and waste demands while improving reliability and environmental performance.
 
The Ohio facility will operate without depending on the traditional electric grid, using a combination of on-site power generation and large-scale battery storage to deliver resilient, continuous electricity for mission-critical AI operations.
 
As AI infrastructure rapidly expands across the United States, the project highlights a growing shift toward privately developed energy systems that can bypass lengthy grid connection delays, reduce pressure on strained electricity networks and preserve capacity for surrounding communities.

The project comes as data center developers face increasing challenges securing electricity quickly enough to meet the explosive growth of AI computing demand. New energy projects can spend years waiting for grid interconnection, pushing developers to seek alternative solutions such as microgrids, private generation and battery storage.
 
The system will integrate gas engines, linear generators, battery storage systems and medium-voltage infrastructure into a coordinated energy platform built to support uninterrupted AI workloads.
 
Veolia will oversee operations integration, commissioning support and long-term plant operations under a performance-based model focused on maximizing uptime, improving asset performance and maintaining operational accountability.
 
The company joined the project before commercial operations began, helping prepare startup procedures, coordinate contractors and manage collaboration among multiple equipment manufacturers working under accelerated construction schedules.
 
Beyond providing power, the project is expected to create a new demand for specialized energy workers. The facility will require a dedicated 24/7 on-site workforce, demonstrating how the expansion of AI infrastructure is reshaping employment needs across the energy sector.
 
Veolia said its experience managing complex energy systems and mission-critical facilities positions it to help developers safely operate next-generation microgrids while balancing industrial growth with community and environmental needs.
