Demonstration operations begin as a step toward establishing a green hydrogen supply chain
ENEOS Corporation has built a large-scale demonstration plant in Queensland, Australia, to produce the hydrogen carrier methylcyclohexane (MCH). The facility utilizes ENEOS's proprietary, low-cost "Direct MCH" technology (electrochemical synthesis of organic hydride). Following trial runs, full demonstration operations are set to begin in January 2027.
This demonstration project gathers the technical data needed to commercialize Direct MCH technology and build large-scale green hydrogen supply chains. While green hydrogen from renewable energy is vital for a carbon-neutral society, cutting production and transport costs remains a major hurdle.
ENEOS aims to cut green hydrogen supply chain costs using Direct MCH technology, which synthesizes MCH in a single step. To quickly find and fix operational challenges, the company will run early-stage demonstration tests in Australia, a global leader in renewable energy production.
ENEOS has developed a 1.2 MW-class electrolyzer, marking a major milestone as this is the minimum unit size needed for commercial deployment of its Direct MCH technology. This new demonstration plant features an electrolyzer roughly eight times larger than the one used in their 2023 trial. It is engineered to produce up to 9 tonnes of MCH per day, with demonstration operations scheduled to run for about two years.
Through demonstration operations, ENEOS will evaluate performance, degradation behavior, and other operational characteristics while collecting data necessary for commercialization.
Building on this demonstration project, ENEOS will evaluate technological progress, economic viability, and market conditions to commercialize and deploy the technology.
