Hyundai Motor Group has opened HTWO ENERGY Cheongju, its first Group-operated integrated waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) production and refueling facility, marking a major step toward creating a locally self-sufficient hydrogen ecosystem in South Korea.

 

Located in Cheongju, the facility converts regional waste resources into hydrogen, helping reduce supply chain costs compared with hydrogen transported from distant coastal production sites. 

 

The project advances Hyundai’s HTWO hydrogen business strategy by linking waste treatment, hydrogen production, carbon utilization and vehicle refueling within a single integrated site.

 

"HTWO ENERGY Cheongju demonstrates a circular economy model in which hydrogen is produced from locally generated wastewater sludge and utilized within the local community.

HTWO ENERGY Cheongju is designed to produce approximately 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day, enough to supply fuel for around 100 all-new NEXO fuel cell electric vehicles or 30 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses.

 

Hyundai Motor Group said the facility represents a model for expanding circular hydrogen production, using locally available resources to strengthen energy independence and support the growth of hydrogen-powered mobility.
