Supplies 40% of critical steel requirement
Jindal Stainless has taken a key position in India’s green mobility revolution by supplying around 40% of the total stainless steel requirement for the country’s first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant contribution to the future of sustainable rail transport.
The company’s premium austenitic stainless steel grade X5CrNi1810, produced at its Jajpur and Hisar plants, has been used in the fabrication of the hydrogen-powered train, which represents a major step forward in Indian Railways’ efforts to adopt cleaner and more efficient transportation solutions.
With hydrogen propulsion technology at its core, the train highlights India’s growing focus on reducing carbon emissions while building next-generation infrastructure aligned with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Stainless steel has become a preferred choice for advanced railway applications due to its superior corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, crash-worthiness, fire and impact resistance, durability, and recyclability. Its lightweight characteristics also support greater energy efficiency, making it a critical material for emerging technologies such as hydrogen-powered mobility.
Commenting on the development, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless, Abhyuday Jindal said, "The future of mobility will be defined not only by cleaner sources of energy but also by advanced materials that make these technologies more efficient, durable and sustainable.
"We are proud to contribute to India's first hydrogen-powered train, an important milestone in the country's clean mobility journey and its vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
"Stainless steel has consistently demonstrated its value in railway applications through its strength, corrosion resistance, safety and lifecycle performance. As India accelerates the development of next generation transport infrastructure, we remain committed to delivering material solutions that enable innovation, sustainability and long-term value."
