The new facility will use locally generated renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen for VfA’s fleet of waste collection trucks
Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of Nel ASA, has received a firm purchase order from H2 Energy for an MC500, a containerized 2.5 MW PEM electrolyser. The system will be delivered to the Association for Waste Disposal (Verein für Abfallentsorgung, VfA) in Buchs, Switzerland. VfA Buchs has selected H2 Energy to deliver a turn-key hydrogen production and refueling facility. The hydrogen produced will be integrated into the Swiss green hydrogen ecosystem, helping to further decarbonize the region’s energy supply and mobility solutions.
The new facility will use locally generated renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen for VfA’s fleet of waste collection trucks, for industrial applications, and for distribution within the broader Swiss hydrogen network.
This latest purchase order marks the third containerized PEM system H2 Energy has ordered from Nel, following an MC400 and a smaller C30 PEM unit. The continued collaboration underscores the proven quality, reliability, and performance of Nel’s PEM technology, as well as the company’s long-standing expertise in electrolyser manufacturing.
“H2 Energy has a long and trusted partnership with Nel that began in 2016, when a C30 PEM electrolyser was first used to fuel an early ecosystem for heavy-duty mobility,” said Rolf Huber, Founder and Chairman of H2 Energy. “Since then, we’ve operated an MC400 PEM electrolyser for more than 30,000 hours in our joint venture Hydrospider, and logged over 12,000 hours with an MC500 for our customer WPO. These two plants form the backbone of the Swiss Green Hydrogen Ecosystem, fueling a network of 18 refueling stations and powering a fleet of heavy-duty fuel cell trucks that have collectively traveled more than 14 million kilometers. This new project for VfA marks another significant milestone, and we look forward to continuing our strong collaboration with Nel to decarbonize mobility and industrial sectors in Switzerland and beyond.”
Todd Cartwright, Chief Commercial Officer at Nel, added: “We are very pleased to support H2 Energy and VfA Buchs in this important initiative. H2 Energy has been a pioneer in developing a commercial green hydrogen value chain, and this project highlights both the strength of our partnership and their ability to deliver high-quality, sustainable hydrogen solutions.”
