Nobian and Air Products have signed a long-term agreement to supply RFNBO-compliant, certified hydrogen from Nobian’s Rotterdam facility, expanding access to renewable hydrogen as European industries face tightening decarbonization requirements.

 

The deal gives Air Products access to certified hydrogen produced at Nobian’s renewables-powered chlor-alkali electrolysis plant — a facility that became the first large-scale European renewable hydrogen producer to receive ISCC EU certification for RFNBO in 2025.

 

With annual hydrogen production capacity of more than 14,000 tonnes, equivalent to 1.68 PJ, the Rotterdam facility is Europe’s largest RFNBO-certified hydrogen plant.

 

The agreement also strengthens Rotterdam’s position as a major European hydrogen hub. Using its existing infrastructure and distribution network, Air Products will make RFNBO-certified hydrogen available to customers seeking to meet RED III requirements while advancing their decarbonization efforts.

Air Products said the partnership will help customers access certified hydrogen from an established production source without waiting for new infrastructure to come online.

RFNBO certification is increasingly important for fuel suppliers and industrial hydrogen users, including refineries, as the EU pushes toward its 2030 decarbonization targets.

 

Under the EU’s targets, at least 1% of transport fuels and 42% of hydrogen used in industry must come from RFNBO-certified sources by 2030.

 

The Nobian-Air Products agreement therefore puts certified renewable hydrogen into an existing industrial network — offering customers a route to compliance while supporting the broader expansion of Europe’s hydrogen economy.
