We do not just sell individual products; we build long-term partnerships as a comprehensive, dependable source.
How do you balance between growing demand for natural ingredients and continued functional necessity of synthetics?
We support over 1,000 active accounts across 60+ countries, navigating diverse regulatory frameworks, consumer preferences, and product life cycles. While some partners exclusively utilize natural formulations, pharmaceutical clients require rigorous synthetic preservatives. Many customers currently rely on synthetics while actively developing natural next-generation alternatives.
Our goal is to support customers with tailored solutions at every stage of their development. The Salinatural series was designed with this exact vision in mind. As clients shift toward natural preservation, we provide tested, commercially viable alternatives to ensure a seamless transition. This forward-thinking approach drives our product development, allowing us to anticipate market trends rather than just responding to them.
SCPL has achieved significant cost and quality advantages through backward integration beginning with in-house production of PHBA for parabens. How critical is the supply chain to a company's competitive positioning?
Backward integration has transformed our entire manufacturing philosophy. Initiated as a cost-saving measure with PHBA, it has proven invaluable far beyond mere cost efficiency. By producing our own starting materials, we secure complete quality control and protect our production timelines from the inconsistencies and delays of external suppliers during tight market cycles.
With global supply networks facing unprecedented challenges, supply chain control has become our greatest differentiator. We have deepened our backward integration across strategic categories, securing the foundational ingredients for our suncare portfolio and ensuring reliable delivery of key UV filters.
From triple-effect evaporators and Zero Liquid Discharge systems to solar energy adoption across facilities, sustainability is deeply embedded in SCPL's operations. How do you ensure these commitments remain financially sustainable for the company's business?
Framing sustainability through a long-term lens fundamentally transforms our financial outlook. We invest heavily in advanced infrastructure—including Multiple Effect Evaporation (MEE), Biological Treatment Plants (BTP), and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems—to recover and reuse up to 70% of our process water for facility maintenance and landscaping. Furthermore, we have expedited the transition to renewable energy by installing solar power across two manufacturing plants, our corporate office, and R&D facilities, locking in long-term cost savings. At our core, sustainability begins at the process level; our teams continue to make significant strides in minimizing effluent output while strictly reducing overall water and solvent consumption.
Salinatural series features proprietary natural preservative blends incorporating botanicals such as Turmeric, Clove, and Lemongrass. R&D challenges in developing natural preservatives capable of matching broad-spectrum efficacy of traditional synthetics?
Our goal for the Salinatural line was deliberately uncompromising. We wanted to eliminate the need for extra supporting actives by making each blend a standalone preservative system. More importantly, we ensured that every blend goes beyond mere preservation—offering unique, built-in skin benefits that make it a truly multifunctional ingredient.
Developing a solution that met every technical requirement demanded extensive research into botanical synergies. Our R&D team evaluated diverse plant-based actives, mapped their combined antimicrobial mechanisms, and went through multiple formulation cycles to achieve the exact specification. Inspired by Indian Ayurveda, our final preservative blends are now patented and commercially validated. They are currently used across global markets, backed by rigorous performance data. This robust scientific foundation is exactly what differentiates our natural products from competitors making unverified claims. Additionally, while early development faced challenges with the blends' natural aroma, today's market actively embraces this clean, authentic scent without requiring masking fragrances.
SCPL's product carries certifications including ECOCERT, COSMOS Approved, and Cruelty Free. How do these standards influence raw material selection and long-term product development roadmap?
Achieving ECOCERT and COSMOS certifications is more than just a marketing claim. These standards impose a strict framework on ingredient sourcing, processing, and formulation that shapes our entire development process. Every raw material is strictly vetted for its origin, sustainability, and compliance with certification requirements. This stringent policy elevates the quality of our supply chain, pushing us to exclude functional ingredients that fail to meet these strict ethical and environmental thresholds.
Certification readiness is now built directly into our design process rather than added retrospectively. For our natural and botanical portfolios, we evaluate compliance and sustainability at the earliest concept stage, ensuring new ingredients are eco-friendly, responsibly sourced, and globally compliant to meet evolving consumer standards.
What is SCPL's strategy for expanding its presence in India and internationally over the coming years?
Our growth strategy operates on two parallel tracks. First, is portfolio expansion. We are developing new product verticals that complement our existing offering, enabling customers to source a broader range of formulation ingredients from a single partner. The emulsifier category represents a significant opportunity in this regard. We are working on natural and cleaner alternatives to standard commodity emulsifiers, consistent with our broader approach of offering the market more sophisticated choices. Our new application laboratory, opened in Mumbai in 2025, supports this development work with direct formulation testing capabilities.
Second, is geographic deepening. We are supplying to over sixty countries and being genuinely close to customers in those markets is the next stage. We are establishing offices and warehouses in key international markets to reduce lead times, improve service levels, and build the kind of on-the-ground relationships that sustain long-term business. Underpinning both is our investment in R&D infrastructure. Our new R&D centre in Hyderabad is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2027. It will significantly expand development capacity across preservatives, suncare, emulsifiers, and botanical extracts.
Supplying to over sixty countries and serving 1,000+ customers require navigating a complex matrix of regulatory requirements including REACH, Halal, Kosher, and others. How does SCPL manage quality and compliance?
Our approach is to calibrate our internal standards to the most stringent requirements applicable anywhere in our market and apply those standards universally. Rather than maintaining a tiered compliance system by geography, we establish a single quality benchmark that satisfies the most demanding regulatory environment we operate in and hold all production to that standard. This requires sustained investment in regulatory intelligence. Our teams, both internally and through distribution partners in key markets, monitor legislative and regulatory developments across customer geographies on an ongoing basis. The objective is to be positioned ahead of regulatory changes rather than responding to them after they take effect.
The practical benefit of this approach is consistency. Customers who source from us across multiple markets receive the same product quality regardless of whether their local regulatory environment currently demands it. When standards in their market tighten, they have no disruption to manage because we are already compliant.
SCPL continues to manufacture traditional preservatives including parabens, which remain important in pharmaceutical applications. How is the company refining these products to meet environmental and safety standards?
Parabens remain a clinically important preservation system in pharmaceutical formulations, and the responsibility that comes with supplying ingredients for medicinal use demands an uncompromising approach to quality. Our continuous improvement programme on these products focuses on two primary areas. First, is assay improvement, consistently raising the purity of the active ingredient to deliver the cleanest possible product to customers. Second, is process refinement, specifically the reduction of residual solvent content through ongoing optimisation of our manufacturing processes. These are not dramatic reformulations but disciplined, incremental improvements that matter significantly in a product category where specification compliance and safety documentation are subject to rigorous regulatory scrutiny.
SCPL has developed and filed patents on several proprietary ingredient blends. What was the strategic rationale for building a proprietary innovation portfolio and what has been the commercial outcome?
Our patent portfolio was developed to establish Salicylates and Chemicals as a true industry innovator rather than just a manufacturer. We wanted to prove that India has the scientific and industrial capabilities to create world-class specialty chemical innovations, and we demonstrated this by securing commercially validated intellectual property.
Our patented, multi-functional blends deliver multiple performance benefits from a single ingredient. This simplifies the formulation architecture, reduces inventory complexity, and improves overall product economics.
Additionally, we offer forward-compatible alternatives to chemistries facing global regulatory phase-outs. These patented solutions are commercially validated and actively used across international markets. Our long-term sourcing relationships reflect strong customer trust and prove the value of our proprietary innovation.
Biotechnology and bio-based ingredient development are emerging as significant frontiers in specialty chemicals. How is SCPL positioning itself in this area?
Bio-based ingredient development is an active component of our current R&D agenda and it will become more prominent as our infrastructure investment fructifies. Skin microbiome science is opening entirely new categories of active ingredients. Fermentation-derived materials are proving their value across multiple product types in personal care and pharmaceutical applications.
At Salicylates, our R&D teams are engaged in developing bio-based ingredients with applications in personal care. This work will gain substantial momentum with the opening of our Hyderabad R&D centre in 2027, which has been designed specifically to support next-generation product development. Biotechnology and bio-based chemistry are central to the innovation agenda we are building at Hyderabad facility.
Salicylates and Chemicals is a women-owned company operating in an industry where women remain significantly underrepresented. How does that ownership translate into how you build and develop your team?
Chemical industry has historically been dominated by men and that is something we believe needs to change. As a women-owned company, it is our responsibility to demonstrate what meaningful inclusion looks like in chemical sector. Over the past two years, Salicylates has grown its workforce by thirty percent, and a deliberate focus has been placed on increasing women representation across organisation, including technical and leadership roles.
The company has also launched Rise and React, a structured mentorship programme for women within Salicylates. The programme is designed to equip women in the team with the guidance, skills, and visibility needed to grow into senior roles within the company. The chemical industry needs more women in leadership, and our intention is to develop those leaders from within the organisation.
What is your long-term vision for Salicylates and Chemicals? How does involvement of third generation influence the direction of the company?
Salicylates and Chemicals aims to be a globally recognized innovator in specialty personal care and pharmaceutical ingredients, rather than simply an Indian manufacturer of commodity chemicals.
The company is making substantial investments to realise that vision: Capacity expansion across manufacturing facilities, a new R&D centre in Hyderabad operational by Q1 2027, application laboratory in Mumbai already operational, a growing team of experienced scientists and commercial professionals, and an expanding international presence through offices and warehouses in key markets. These are not incremental steps but they represent a deliberate acceleration of the company's ambition.
The involvement of the third generation brings both continuity and renewal to this process. The values on which Salicylates was founded, long-term orientation, depth of customer relationships, scientific rigour, and a commitment to quality, remain intact.
