The American Chemistry Council (ACC) is urging the Senate to swiftly confirm Surface Transportation Board (STB) Commissioner Karen Hedlund for a second term, arguing that experienced leadership is critical as the agency faces major decisions affecting the nation's freight rail system and U.S. manufacturers.

Ahead of Senate consideration of Hedlund's nomination, ACC President and CEO Chris Jahn called on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to advance her confirmation, saying the Board's stability is essential at a pivotal time for the rail industry.

“We thank the members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation for holding a hearing to consider Commissioner Hedlund’s nomination and urge them to approve her for a second term to help provide vital stability and continuity to the Board."

"Our industry is one of the railroads’ largest customers by both volume and revenue, and the STB is the only federal agency with the authority to resolve freight rail issues that impact our member companies. Timely, decisive action by the Board is critical to supporting U.S. chemical manufacturing and the broader economy.

“Facing pressure to adopt long-overdue regulatory reforms that enhance rail competition and service and rigorously review the largest and most consequential rail merger proposal in U.S. history, the Board needs experienced leadership. Confirming Commissioner Hedlund will help ensure the STB is equipped to meet this moment and deliver results for American manufacturers.”
