BASF Agricultural Solutions is investing a low double-digit million-euro sum in a new Climate Center at its headquarters in Limburgerhof, Germany, as it expands research capacity and strengthens its ability to meet tightening global regulatory requirements for crop protection products.

 

Construction is already underway, with the purpose-built facility expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. The center will feature state-of-the-art climate chambers capable of precisely controlling temperature, humidity and light, allowing scientists to conduct reproducible, high-quality studies under tightly regulated conditions.

 

The investment comes as regulatory demands increase and the need for Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)-compliant ecotoxicology studies grows worldwide.

 

“The new Climate Center is much more than a research facility. It is a strategic investment that supports our ambition to combine world-class research with enhanced regulatory capabilities,” said Melanie Bausen-Wiens, Member of the Management Board of BASF Agricultural Solutions in charge of Technology. 

 

“This will enable us to bring innovative solutions to the farmers more efficiently, responsibly and in line with evolving regulatory requirements.”

 

The new facility is designed to boost both the scale and reliability of BASF’s ecotoxicology research. Precisely controlled environmental conditions will support scientifically robust studies while improving planning reliability, data quality and capacity as the company handles a growing volume of research.

 

Several climate chambers will be dedicated to insecticide research. By creating controlled conditions for insect populations, the facility will support early-stage screening and discovery programs aimed at developing the next generation of crop protection solutions.

 

The project also reinforces Limburgerhof’s role as a major global hub for agricultural innovation. BASF said the expanded infrastructure will strengthen the site’s scientific capabilities and competitiveness while helping attract future talent.

 

With construction now underway, the Climate Center represents a significant new investment in BASF’s research infrastructure—and a bid to keep pace with an increasingly demanding regulatory landscape while accelerating the development of new agricultural technologies.
