Indian Railways has taken a decisive step towards cleaner rail transport, successfully operationalizing the country’s first LNG–diesel dual-fuel DEMU train — a breakthrough that could reshape energy use across India’s vast rail network.

The milestone project, rolled out at Sabarmati, features advanced 2,200-litre LNG Receiving, Storage and Regasification Systems supplied by INOX India, one of the world’s leading cryogenic technology providers. The systems have been integrated with 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars (DPUs) of Dual-Fuel Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains.

The cutting-edge technology enables seamless dual-fuel operations using LNG and diesel, reducing diesel consumption by up to 40% and significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The move signals a major leap toward energy-efficient, low-emission rail mobility in a network that carries millions daily.

The initiative, conceptualized by Indian Railways’ erstwhile Alternative Fuels Division (IRAOF), aims to convert an initial batch of 10 DPUs from conventional diesel engines into hybrid units powered by cleaner LNG alongside diesel. INOXCVA played a central role in enabling the transition.

Two pilot units underwent extensive trials and certifications in the Sabarmati Division before earning operational clearance. Following their successful performance, Indian Railways is now set to induct additional units under its existing contract with INOXCVA.

The impact could be far-reaching. DEMU trains are widely deployed on short- and medium-distance routes across the country. With nearly 40% diesel substitution, the upgraded fleet promises substantial fuel savings and a meaningful cut in emissions.

Commenting on the achievement, Deepak Acharya, Chief Executive Officer, INOX India Ltd, said, “At INOX India, we take immense pride in partnering with Indian Railways on its journey toward green mobility by delivering world-class cryogenic systems that enable cleaner, more efficient fuel pathways.

"The ability to substitute up to 40% of diesel with LNG is not just a technological milestone—it marks a decisive shift in how large-scale rail mobility can be decarbonized while enhancing operational efficiency and long-term sustainability. As Indian Railways accelerates the adoption of dual-fuel solutions across its network, we see LNG as a powerful transition fuel and liquid hydrogen as the next frontier for zero-emission rail locomotives.

"Backed by deep R&D capabilities and decades of cryogenic expertise, INOXCVA remains at the forefront of innovation—developing future-ready solutions that align with India’s clean mobility vision and reinforce the nation’s long-term energy security.”
