Moeve and ArcelorMittal are joining forces to develop and scale technologies aimed at cutting emissions from Europe’s steel industry, with a new 50-50 innovation platform backed by private and public funding.

 

The platform, being established under the companies’ Green Molecules to Green Steel (G2G) partnership, will focus on turning cleaner energy sources—including biomethane and biogas, renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, and second-generation biofuels—into commercially viable solutions for low-emissions steel production.

 

The initiative brings together Moeve’s expertise in energy and innovation with ArcelorMittal’s industrial and research capabilities. Its goal is to move technologies beyond the laboratory and into industrial-scale production, linking the energy transition directly with the competitiveness of Europe’s steel sector.

 

The platform will develop industrial demonstrators that can subsequently be scaled at production facilities. It will also explore technologies such as more efficient catalysts, carbon capture and utilization, biotechnology and artificial intelligence for developing new materials and improving industrial processes.

 

The initiative will be financed through the partners’ own resources alongside public funding. Sekuens, the Asturian Agency for Science, Business Competitiveness, and Innovation, will contribute through existing and future programs supporting innovation in Asturias. Other regional and national public bodies, as well as private-sector partners, could join the platform in the future.

ArcelorMittal Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Pinakin Chaubal said the scale of the challenge makes collaboration essential: "We need to continue exploring technologies that will enable us to achieve environmentally and economically sustainable production, and we must do so as soon as possible. ArcelorMittal has large R&D centers around the world, particularly in Spain, but given the complexity of the challenge, we will never be able to solve it on our own. Now more than ever, we need to focus on collaborative innovation models, and this platform is an excellent example.”

 

Sekuens CEO David González said the project could give Asturias’ innovation ecosystem a significant boost: "Sekuens fully supports this initiative, which is pioneering the creation of a unique framework for collaborative innovation among companies. In addition to the direct impact on both companies, this platform will have a significant effect on strengthening the innovation ecosystem in Asturias, further accelerating high-growth, cutting-edge technology companies in fields such as safety and biofuels.”

 

The platform is designed to function as an open innovation hub, connecting Moeve and ArcelorMittal’s research centers with startups, universities and technology centers. The companies say the model will help accelerate disruptive technologies while strengthening the industrial innovation ecosystem and attracting talent.

 

The partnership comes as both companies pursue major decarbonization investments in Spain.
