This diploma programme will help students and professionals gain skills directly relevant to the polyurethane sector

Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU) has inaugurated the Centre of Excellence in Polyurethane Technology (CoE-PUTech) in collaboration with the Indian Polyurethane Association (IPUA) at its Vidyavihar campus. The centre marks a major milestone in advancing education, research, and industry collaboration in polyurethane science and technology.

Building on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between SVU and IPUA in April 2023, the new centre also introduces the Post-Graduate Diploma in Polyurethane Technology (PGD-PU Tech.), a work-integrated learning programme designed to bridge academic learning with industry practice.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Harneet Kochar, Chairman, IPUA; Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, SVU; Prof. Ajay Kapoor, Vice-Chancellor Designate; Dr. Satish Modh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, SVU; Prof. S. Sivaram, Professor of Eminence, SVU; along with deans, directors, senior faculty members, representatives from Dow Chemicals and BASF India, and postgraduate students of polymer science.

The newly launched diploma combines theoretical instruction with hands-on training at the state-of-the-art PU-PPAD Laboratory. It equips learners with in-depth knowledge in polymer science, polyurethane formulation, material characterization, product design, and sustainable manufacturing practices. With its flexible format—featuring online learning modules and in-person laboratory sessions—the programme is designed to serve both students and working professionals.

The CoE-PUTech laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments such as hot air ovens, airflow testers, pycnometers, dumbbell presses, ball resilience testers, Bennewart flex testers, abrasion and compression set testers, and foam cutting machines. These facilities enable practical training in polyurethane processing, testing, and applications. Research activities at the centre focus on product innovation, recycling, end-of-life management, and sustainability across the polyurethane value chain.

Professor V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, said, “Somaiya Vidyavihar University has always strived to link academic learning with industry practice. The Department of Polymer Science, led by experienced researchers and professionals, continues to create opportunities that blend theory with practical training. This diploma programme will help students and professionals gain skills directly relevant to the polyurethane sector.”

Harneet Kochar, Chairman, Indian Polyurethane Association, added, “This collaboration represents a structured partnership between academia and industry. Somaiya Vidyavihar University offers a strong academic foundation and infrastructure, while IPUA contributes industry expertise and practical insights. Together, we are building a platform that fosters innovation, skill development, and sustainability in polyurethane technology.”
