Borouge International is stepping up its European recycling operations with capacity expansions in Germany and Austria, targeting rising demand for mechanically recycled polyolefins and strengthening the region’s access to circular materials.

The company said it will expand recycling capacity at its Niedergebra site in Germany and Wildon facility in Austria, boosting its ability to supply recycled materials as brands respond to sustainability commitments, tighter regulations and growing supply-resilience concerns.

At Niedergebra, formerly mtm plastics, annual production of recycled mixed polyolefin (rPO) materials will rise by nearly 9 kilotonnes. The facility processes post-consumer mixed polyolefin waste into recycled materials used across a range of rigid applications. The additional capacity is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2027.

In Austria, Borouge International will increase annual recycled polyethylene (rPE) output at its Wildon site, formerly Ecoplast, by up to 5 kilotonnes. The additional capacity is expected to come on stream in the fourth quarter of 2027, with the expansion aimed particularly at growing demand for recycled materials in flexible packaging.

The investments come as European manufacturers and brands face mounting pressure to increase the use of recycled content, including in response to evolving regulatory requirements such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Borouge International’s European recycling footprint also includes its Elin Pelin facility in Bulgaria, which produces more than 20 kilotonnes a year of premium-quality post-consumer recycled polypropylene (rPP). Together, the three sites give the company recycling capabilities spanning flexible PE, rigid PP and mixed polyolefin streams.

“Circular materials are a strategic resource for Europe and around the world, not only to meet sustainability and regulatory requirements, but also to strengthen industrial competitiveness, brand differentiation and supply resilience,” said Dirk Langhammer, Senior Vice President Circular Solutions, Borouge International.

“The investments in our European recycling platform give an even larger range of customers more reliable access to circular polyolefin solutions, from premium Borcycle™grades to fit-for-purpose Recleo materials tailored to diverse applications.”

Borouge International also supplies recycled polyethylene film grades from its Syndigo plant in Indiana, US, while in Asia it works with a broad network of suppliers for recycled materials.

The latest investments reinforce Borouge International’s push to scale circular solutions across global markets, while giving customers more dependable access to recycled polyolefins and supporting a more competitive and resilient materials value chain.
