Syensqo is investing at its Spinetta Marengo manufacturing site in Italy to boost recycling capabilities and increase fluorine recovery
Syensqo has expanded its portfolio of circular high-performance fluids with UL Environmental Claim Validation for Fomblin Y, reinforcing its push to recover and reuse fluorine while reducing dependence on virgin raw materials.
The validation, secured under UL 2809 in September 2026, builds on the certification Syensqo obtained in 2025 for selected high-performance elastomers and lubricant fluids.
Around 40% of the fluorine allocated to the newly certified Fomblin Y products comes from post-industrial recycled (PIR) hydrofluoric acid (HF), using a mass balance accounting approach.
The move comes as Europe seeks to strengthen the security of supply of critical raw materials. Fluorspar, the primary mineral source of fluorine, is classified as a critical raw material under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). By recovering fluorine from post-industrial waste, Syensqo aims to reduce dependence on virgin resources and support more resilient European supply chains.
Alongside the expanded certification, Syensqo is investing at its Spinetta Marengo manufacturing site in Italy to boost recycling capabilities and increase fluorine recovery.
The investment is designed to improve the availability of recycled raw materials for the company’s specialty polymers portfolio, as demand grows for circular high-performance fluorinated elastomers and fluids across industries.
“Our customers are increasingly looking for high-performance materials that enable them to use resources more efficiently while strengthening the resilience of their supply chains.
"The expansion of our certified Fomblin portfolio, together with our investment in recycled fluorine recovery at Spinetta Marengo, demonstrates how we are responding to this demand at an industrial scale. By recovering and reusing fluorine locally, we can reduce reliance on virgin resources while helping build a more circular and resilient European fluorine value chain," said Tom Wood, Vice President, Head of Product and Asset Management at Syensqo.
The expanded UL validation for Fomblin Y marks another step in Syensqo’s efforts to integrate recycled raw materials into high-performance fluorinated products while meeting the stringent requirements of industrial applications.
The company says the approach enables customers to increase the use of recycled raw materials without compromising the performance and reliability needed in demanding operating environments.
Under Syensqo’s mass balance system, 40% by weight of the fluorine in the Fomblin
Y molecule is allocated as recycled fluorine. Because fluorine accounts for more than 65% of the polymer’s total mass, this translates into an allocated recycled content of 25% by weight in the final molecule.
The expanded portfolio and investment at Spinetta Marengo underline Syensqo’s strategy of combining material performance with greater resource efficiency, as Europe looks to strengthen circularity and reduce its exposure to critical raw material supply risks.
